A mother's dream, a legacy of joyful learning
One morning in the 1980s, a mother was awoken by her daughter. The pre-schooler was dressed in uniform with eyes shining excitedly, ready to go to school. But it was a weekend, and the school was closed.
That mother was EtonHouse Founder Dr Ng Gim Choo, and her daughter, E-Ching.
When they first moved to London, Dr Ng had worried about how her 2-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter would adjust to their new school, culture, and language. To her surprise, they settled in quickly and loved going to school. Each day, they returned home brimming with stories—of discoveries made, friendships formed, and lessons that ignited their curiosity. School was not just a place to learn—it was a place where they longed to be, even on weekends.
When Dr Ng returned to Singapore, she wanted to create a joyful and stress-free learning environment where children would be as excited to learn and loved being in just as her children had. With passion, perseverance, and a vision inspired by pedagogical approaches from around the world, EtonHouse opened its first pre-school and introduced Singapore’s first inquiry-based programme at Broadrick Road.
The early days were difficult as rote learning was the norm. EtonHouse’s unprecented approach to education was unfamiliar to parents. But Dr Ng was not alone. EtonHouse was built by a community of dedicated educators who saw the world through each child’s eyes, identify his or her strengths, and tailor individualised learning experiences.
The school was well-received by parents. Families soon found their children asking to go to school on weekends, just as E-Ching once had.
What began as a mother’s dream gradually grew into an international education group with over 100 schools in 9 countries, shaping the lives of more than 25,000 students. Today, EtonHouse remains what it has always been—a place where children don’t just learn, but love to learn.
